Why Background Color Matters
Most passport applications require a specific background color. Using the wrong background color is one of the most common reasons passport photos are rejected. Our tool automatically sets the correct background when you select your country.
White Background Countries
The majority of countries require a plain white (#FFFFFF) or off-white background:
- ๐บ๐ธ United States โ pure white
- ๐จ๐ฆ Canada โ white or light grey
- ๐ฆ๐บ Australia โ white or light grey
- ๐ณ๐ฟ New Zealand โ white or light grey
- ๐ฏ๐ต Japan โ white or light grey
- ๐ฐ๐ท South Korea โ white
- ๐ง๐ท Brazil โ white
- ๐ฒ๐ฝ Mexico โ white
- ๐ฟ๐ฆ South Africa โ white
Light Blue Background Countries
Several countries require a light blue background:
- ๐ฎ๐ณ India โ light blue (#A8C5E8) or white
- ๐ต๐ฐ Pakistan โ blue
- ๐ง๐ฉ Bangladesh โ light blue
- ๐ฑ๐ฐ Sri Lanka โ light blue
- ๐ณ๐ฌ Nigeria โ light blue
Schengen / European Union
Most EU countries and Schengen zone members follow ICAO standards requiring a light grey or white background:

- ๐ซ๐ท France โ light grey
- ๐ฎ๐น Italy โ white
- ๐ช๐ธ Spain โ white
- ๐ณ๐ฑ Netherlands โ white or very light grey

- ๐ธ๐ช Sweden โ white or light grey
UK Passport Photo Background
๐ฌ๐ง The United Kingdom requires a plain cream or light grey background โ not pure white. The face must stand out clearly from the background.
China Passport Photo Background
๐จ๐ณ China requires a white background for passports. However, Chinese visa photos often require a white background but some consulates specify light blue โ always check with the specific consulate.
